Tilson Tracker Day 216

Sunrise Paving Edition

Microtrenching: A Failed Promise

The Gigapower project continues to disrupt our streets, and this week, we are focusing on the latest development: the now-required excavation of City streets by Sunrise Paving (a Gigapower contractor) digging a 3.5-inch by a 3-foot ditch in front of our downtown homes. This ongoing destruction further proves that microtrenching is an unproven technology that creates more cleanup, complications, and long-term infrastructure issues than it is worth.

The Reality vs. The Promise

We were promised a seamless installation process that would bring high-speed fiber without major disruptions to our roads. Instead, 216 days into this project, we are seeing extensive damage, prolonged restoration, and a clear indication that microtrenching is failing. The cracks, displaced asphalt, and the continuous need for new excavation demonstrate that this method is unsustainable.

Key Issues Observed

  • Repeated Road Excavation: Instead of a quick and clean installation, Sunrise Paving aisnow forced to dig additional trenches, further degrading our streets.

  • Increased Cleanup Requirements: The initial promise of minimal impact has turned into endless construction, requiring more restoration than anticipated.

  • Long-Term Infrastructure Concerns: We are left wondering about the durability of these repairs and how our roads will hold up after repeated microtrenching efforts.

It’s Time to Move On

Microtrenching has proven to be more hassle than it is worth. The City must acknowledge this failure and seek alternative, less invasive methods for fiber installation. We urge the City of Las Vegas to:

  1. Cease Further Microtrenching: Recognize the problems this technology has created and stop the cycle of unnecessary destruction.

  2. Explore Alternative Installation Methods: Consider more traditional and proven methods of fiber deployment that do not require repeated roadwork.

  3. Demand Accountability: Ensure that Gigapower and its contractors are held responsible for the ongoing damage and commit to fully restoring impacted streets.

What You Can Do

Residents are encouraged to document and report any issues they observe. Submit your photos and stories using our Share Your Story form to help us hold all parties accountable.

Day 216 has made it clear: This is not what we were promised, and it’s time to move on from microtrenching.
