Tilson Tracker Day 207

Restoration Work: Progress and Concerns

This week’s Tilson Tracker focuses on Sunrise Paving, a contractor engaged in restoration work on streets affected by the Tilson and Gigapower project. While we acknowledge and appreciate the initiation of asphalt restoration, there are significant concerns about the way Sunrise Paving is conducting its operations.

Key Issues Observed

Despite the importance of restoring our streets, the following concerns have been documented:

  • Cones Left Overnight: Sunrise Paving has been observed leaving traffic cones in place overnight, creating unnecessary hazards for drivers and pedestrians.

  • Missing Flaggers: Several work zones operated without the required flaggers, posing safety risks by failing to control traffic effectively.

  • Working Outside Permitted Hours: Work has been documented continuing past 7 PM, violating the stipulations set forth in their permits.

  • Undefined Work Zones: Crews have been seen working outside of defined work zones, raising questions about adherence to approved plans and traffic control measures.

  • Improper No Parking Signs: Signs posted by Sunrise Paving lack specific days and times, causing confusion for residents and leaving vehicles vulnerable to being towed without adequate warning.

The Bigger Picture

These issues demonstrate a troubling pattern of non-compliance, even during the restoration phase of the project. While progress is essential, cutting corners and ignoring stipulations undermines community trust and prolongs the disruption.

Next Steps

We call on Gigapower, Sunrise Paving, Tilson, and the City of Las Vegas to:

  1. Enforce Compliance: Ensure that Sunrise Paving operates strictly within the terms of their permits, including proper traffic control, flagging, and adherence to approved work hours.

  2. Improve Communication: Provide clear and consistent notifications to residents, including accurate no parking signage with specified times and dates.

  3. Prioritize Safety: Address unsafe practices, such as working without flaggers and leaving cones overnight, to protect both workers and the public.
